About me and my practice

It is really important that you find the right counsellor for you. So I have tried to tell you enough here and on my website to give you a good feel for what it would be like to work with me but if you have any questions at all please do just get in touch.

I am an experienced counsellor including many years with a low cost counselling charity as well as counselling university students and NHS staff.
I offer you a warm, safe, confidential space to explore whatever brings you.
You will never be judged.

I dont think of you as an issue or symptom but as a unique person with many strengths as well as vulnerabilities who just now needs a particular type of support to find the best way to live the kind of life you want and deserve.

I offer short term and open-ended online counselling for adults in the UK using Zoom. Meeting online is different from meeting face-to-face but it is still possible to create the same, warm safe space and the same depth of therapeutic relationship.
Research now shows that online counselling can be just as effective as face-to-face work.
Many people prefer meeting online because of difficulties with anxiety, time or money .

Counselling isnt something that I do to you; it is a team effort.
I will not tell you what to do; we will work together to explore what is important for you. It is your agenda and we will go at the right pace for you. We will explore the things you want to change, understand or resolve and also build on your own strengths, resources and skills.
I will work hard to earn your trust and make you feel safe.
It is hard work for you too; it takes time, emotional energy and commitment. It is not a quick fix.
Our work is confidential and you will never be judged.
I work both short and long term depending on what is right for you.

Experience

I came to counselling first as a client.

About fifteen years ago I found myself suddenly feeling anxious and depressed. I had always coped well with things so it was bewildering. I had some counselling and found it incredibly helpful. I also wondered if I could swap seats and start to help other people myself.

First of all I trained with the fantastic people at Bristol Mind and volunteered on their Mindline for five years to make sure this kind of work really was for me.
It was and so I left a twenty five year-long successful career in business to train as a counsellor. That was both exciting and slightly scary to be starting from scratch again.

It was worth it. It is a huge privilege to do this work, to be trusted by clients, to be alongside them to explore their most difficult experiences and see them start to make the changes they want.

Three years counselling staff based at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
Eight years counselling students at the University of the West of England. I have a particular interest in working with this age group given the scale of transitions they need to negotiate.
Ten years volunteering at Network Counselling in Bristol working short and longer term.

This gives me a wide experience of clients and issues including grief and loss, self esteem, identity and transitions, self criticism, depression, anxiety, relationships and life crisis.

Qualifications

Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling
Certificate in Relational Therapy

Additional Information

I am an integrative counsellor which just means I trained in a variety of approaches which I can integrate together. You dont have to fit in with my approach I can flex how I work to suits you.
I also work relationally. That means that I believe our difficulties mostly arise from our relationships with others or with our self. So, we will often explore what goes on in those relationships and in our sessions too.
I bring a person-centred respect for you as a unique person interwoven with ideas from other traditions such as mindfulness, compassion-focussed and body awareness. If you want to but only if you want to - we can also use creative approaches such as drawing instead of words. Dont worry its not about being a great artist (you will definitely be better than me !) just having a play and expressing yourself in a different way.

Initial Consultation

Choosing to start counselling can be daunting so if you contact me I will give you a warm welcome and do everything I can to put you at your ease and help you feel safe.
We will arrange a free, no obligation, 15 minute phone call when you can tell me about what brings you, any concerns you have and ask me any questions.
We can then arrange our first online session together. It is a chance to get to know each other. You can ask about the counselling process and how I work. I will ask you what brings you to counselling. Towards the end we will talk about how the session has been for you. It is a real chance to decide if counselling is right for you and if I am the right therapist for you.
If so, we will agree an initial number of sessions at the same time each week. We will regularly review how we are doing to make sure that you are getting what you want. If not, we will find a different way of working that suits you better.
